Help ourselves

Mar 14, 2020

Health is currently very much at the forefront of people’s minds and there is a danger of becoming sucked into a maelstrom of fake news, panic buying, unfounded fears, and increased stress. So how can help ourselves during menopause without medical intervention?

Now more than ever we need knowledge in order to make informed decisions about our bodies and our health. Women still need to be guided through the perimenopause and menopause whatever else is going on in the world.

For example, a 35-year-old patient recently visited the clinic for her three-monthly check-up. She had initially come to the clinic because her periods had become irregular and heavy. After a detailed discussion about her medical history, it appeared that nothing had changed over the last few years other than her weight. With absolutely no medical intervention, just examination of the facts and some considered dietary information; her subsequent weight loss appeared to have re-established her regular monthly cycle. She maintained her fertility and hormonal balance through diet. Her sense of achievement and self-knowledge will now empower her to seek information before becoming stressed about anything in the future.

If we want to empower ourselves during these difficult times then we need to look no further than the three key factors that will promote improved whole-body health: exercise, diet, and sleep. Try to include one of each in your day.

For example, if you need to spend an increased amount of time in your home with your family what exercise can you do on your own or include the whole family? How about putting some music on and creating a work out routine to do indoors or in the garden? Or, for a more relaxing few minutes of downtime on your own try some gentle stretching and movement, again indoors or in the garden.

Sleeping or resting provide the brain and body with much needed time to repair, rebuild and regenerate. Anxiety or alcohol can affect our sleep, so give yourself a few moments to unwind at the end of each day in whatever way works best for you. Encourage your family to do likewise.

Everyone has seen the news reports on stockpiling and panic buying. But, what are the key items that will support a strong immune system and provide the body with essential resources? Most importantly, we all need to drink plenty of fluids and cut back on sugar, carbohydrates and alcohol. Including vitamin C, D, zinc, garlic, yogurt and healthy fats like olive oil, butter and coconut oil in our diet will all help.

Remember fear is more likely to kill us than any disease itself.

Stay calm and do your best!
